I loved this book growing up. Clara was my favorite character.

This was just delightful! It's such a sweet story, and so very uplifting.
I should probably note that there is a fair bit of religion in here, which, I imagine, may be a reason to (not) encourage your child to read this. It isn't too preachy, I mean it is very prevalent (and it's made very clear that every character's life got better after trusting in God), but it wouldn't scare anyone into religion, I think. And if you take God out of the equation you'd be left with a wonderful story about people making the best out of life, caring for others, and being grateful for all they have. And no one can really object to that morale.
You could argue that it's too happy an ending, but I quite liked having this little positive bubble of a book. Besides, there is plenty of unhappiness in the beginning too. But there was also humor. Some of my favorite bits were the scenes with Sebastian and Ms. Rottenmeier.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this, and am quite sure I will reread this at some point. And I'm definitely glad to own such a stunning edition!

Read this book over and over when I was 12, and loved it! I was transported to a magical place in the mountains, where the food seemed heavenly, the view, a slice of paradise and the animals so endearing. I love the relationship she has with her gruff grandfather as she slowly worms her way into his heart, only to be ripped away to cold, bleak england.
I haven't re-read this book as an adult but recently visited Dovedale valley, which brought the book back to my mind. Definately want to go back for a picnic and eat a grilled cheese toastie.

Adorable. I'm sad I waited so long to read this one, but I'm looking forward to sharing it with my niece soon. Heidi was charming and gave me a new appreciation of the magic of bracing mountain air and warm sunshine.
I loved this book. I think there are a couple of good movie adaptations, too, but I can't recall which ones I liked and which I didn't...
