Heidi

Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather, much to the concern of the people in the village. During her time with her grandfather, she discovers a world that she enjoys, spending time with her grandfather, Peter and grandmother, playing with the goats and listening to the fir trees. When her aunt, Dete, arrives to take her to Frankfurt to be the friend of another girl, Heidi doesn't want to go. Upon arriving in Frankfurt, she dreams of the day she will be back in the mountains. Will Heidi ever be back in the mountains?

I would rather be with my grandfather on the Alp than anywhere on earth!

My mum read this as a little girl and was shocked to discover I'd never read it. She has fond memories of the book and remembers it as quite a beautiful story, but we don't share the same sentiment about it. Maybe it is because we read it at different stages in our lives.

I didn't mind the story so much as how it was written. I couldn't quite grasp it. It was written in an old-world style, which, being nearly 150 years old, makes sense, but it was verging on almost boring to my poor modern mind. The story's premise is that Heidi does good deeds, learns Christianity, and seemingly performs miracles. Overall, not a lot happens.

Heidi is an innocent child who sees nothing but the good in the world. Everybody who meets Heidi seems drawn to her, maybe some people a bit too much, like the Doctor - who is willing to treat her as one of his own despite barely knowing her. Everybody seems to worship the ground she walks on and can't bear the fact of losing her.

One of the things I found weird is after
a month in the mountains, with some encouragement from a friend, Clara - a girl in a wheelchair - miraculously can walk and no longer needs her chair.

Loved it as much this time around as I did when I was a child.

Wholesome and that fucking kid it's so fricking cute.
It's the anime, but shorter and has religion (Not in a bad way)

It's such a sweet, positive story. You could say it lacks a bit of action or adventure, but the innocence of Heidi is so... inspiring, I guess is the word. She makes the world around her a little bit better without doing anything that requires super powers. She just has a kind and naive heart.

A breath of fresh mountain air that traveled 140 years from Switzerland to get here.
