Someone gave my family a copy of this book, and I remember loving it and hating it both, as a child. Such a terrifying concept, if you're a child devoted to her mother.

An additional fairy tale from Wilhelm Grimm discovered in 1983, masterfully illustrated by Maurice Sendak. The story itself is a grim one *boom-tish* but the preface to it that begins with "Dear Mili" is beautiful. And Sendak's lush surrealism is just wonderful.

I need to buy a copy of this so that I can read it enough more times to write a good review. What is immediately obvious, however, is that this story is as deep as it is beautiful, and the illustrations are as good as the story.

This is a great short story that keeps in the tradition of The Grimm Brothers. There is beautiful imagery, a time of war, and a twisted ending. I love the story behind the book and the story itself.

This one really freaked me out as a child.

Didn't feel like a traditional fairy tale, what with the saints involved. The standout here is really Sendak's illustrations. Probably not one you'd read to a child--this book is almost certainly made for adult fans of the Grimms and Sendak.

(Rated for my personal interest, not the quality of the book or story.)

This book was so comforting as a child and I remember my mother not wanting to read it to us/not wanting us to have it on our shelves and she kept it on hers and at the time I thought it was because it was such a pretty, pretty book and she didn't want us to ruin it but in retrospect the fact that it is so unsettling and unnerving might have had something to do with her decision to keep it as well
