Wow, am I a horror reader now?? 😱 Nat Cassidy, I am new to your game, you are serving sir!

Damn, this book had me genuinely terrified at certain points. You ever stop what your doing cause you think you hear something suddenly and all your senses stand on edge, that was me majority of this book! 😂 “When the Wolf Comes Home” is a fantastic horror story, this isn’t a genre I delve into often but I’m so glad I did. It felt like a movie, an actual good horror! It had twists and turns, that constant feeling of waiting for the shoe to drop cause you know something awful is going to happen.

I also love how deep this book is about fathers and fatherhood/parent hood. Honestly, it makes me want to give my parents a thank you for doing the best they can. It also makes me want to forgive myself for times I felt like I wasn’t the perfect daughter. It’s so tough meeting an expectation that you don’t really understand or get but you know it makes others angry or frustrated. In all, it’s all complicated and sometimes doesn’t make sense no matter how much effort is put into it. Definitely check this one out if you can!

Also, please check the triggers & thank you Nat for your fantastic blurb about content warnings! As a newbie to horror, it really prepared me!

This is the first ever novel by Nat Cassidy that I’ve read, and I loved it.

It was scary, emotional, gory, and funny - there really isn’t anything else you can ask for from a horror story. I also love a bleak tale, as I feel that too many horror stories have a happy ending which a lot of the time I don’t find realistic. I also enjoyed the direction the story went in, from the cover and blurb it wasn’t what I was expecting at all!

I resonated with Jess, as someone who suffers from OCD it was nice to read someone else’s inner thoughts and know that it’s something a lot of people have. I also found her funny, and she was very caring despite the situation she found herself in. The afterword was also so interesting, definitely don’t skip this as you get to learn a bit about Nat’s life and relationship with his own father.

If you haven’t picked this book up yet and you’re a fan of horror, then please don’t miss this one. It’s everything you could want and more. This is Nat Cassidy’s first novel to be published in the UK, so I’m really praying that Titan will publish his other novels! I do own Nestlings as I was lucky enough to find it on Forbidden Planet. I’ll definitely have to push it up my TBR, which is already out of control this year lol.

I put off reading this book bc I had read a few reviews that talked about how intense, dark and emotional it was, and there were trigger warnings of child death and gore.  For those of you concerned about that, I would say that the gore created the horror and fear in the story, and there were only maybe two times where I felt I had to skim past a sentence.  The author didn't use gore to invoke intense emotion or sadness, more to highlight the seriousness of the situation.  I also thought the ending was beautifully done, very thought provoking and honestly if you read carefully, I don't think you could imagine it ending any other way.  There are little pieces throughout that suggest how it may end.
