Told through the live of three young women from very different backgrounds, they all have a struggle to overcome with the war being felt everywhere and each one has a very hard choice to make, that can affect the live of others as well. This was a very interesting read!
Hanna has been sent to live with her childless aunt and uncle who live a very luxurious and different life in the city than what she did growing up. Her aunt quickly gets her acclimated to this type of life, treating Hanna as the daughter she never had. At first it is all very overwhelming and over the top but Hanna has learned to keep her thoughts to herself and in time, she learns the real intentions of her aunt.
Tilde is a German Jewish woman trying to keep to herself as currently she is able to pass as non-Jewish, using the German genes and name to her advantage while she can. But when she falls in love with a shop patron, and her mother gets the opportunity to get to American, Tilde makes a decision that seems to be the best at the time but it could have deadly consequences down the road.
Klara, an on again off again friend of Hanna's is trying her hardest to not be jealous of all that Hanna has gotten and accomplished in the short time she has known her, and been in the city. She knows it is not all Hanna's fault, but it is hard to see her future taken from her by another girl and yet this girl means no harm and does not want this future she has been pushed into. The two end up at the Bride School together and their lives are futures come into question when they seem to always been in the midst of problems.
This was such a well written novel, and it was interesting to read from the different girls backgrounds and perspectives. Reading these WWII novels, makes you realize that there was not one thing that Hitler and the Nazi's did not control or have their hands in. Thank you to the author for the free autographed novel, and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite, I need to read the others of Aimie's I have on my shelves!

Short synopsis: Germany 1939, rumors of war are beginning. Hanna, a young German woman is sent to live with her aunt and uncle and is quickly forced into a relationship with a high ranking SS Soldier. Tilde is half Jewish and pregnant, watching her family and neighbors be taken from their homes.
My Thoughts: I love a good historical fiction story, especially one centered around WWII. This is the first I’ve found that discusses German Women right before the war, and how they were expected to act and what to believe politically. It was fascinating to read of the German School (that really existed) and the brainwashing and propaganda that was forced into these homes.
These are all fictional characters, but i feel like each of them represented different situations women would have faced at that time. I applaud those brave enough to stand with their beliefs, and unafraid to help someone in need.
Read this if you’re a sucker for:
- Historical fiction set in WWII
- Strong female characters
- Multiple Points of view
- A central friend bringing everyone together
