I wish I had known this book when I was teaching. It would be so much fun to read aloud, and the print-making illustrations would be a fun art lesson. The few words of the traditional Scottish that she left in added so much fun as well.

This is a repeating rhyme that adds a verse each page like ‘the first day of Christmas’. This was a popular song in Scotland at one time. Sorche grew up hearing this and she translated it for Americans.

The artwork is that art where you are drawing the picture in black and white inks and they brush a color or two over it. This one is gold and teal. I don’t care for the artwork at all. I just don’t like the style and I see it often. The Caldecott committee sure did like the style back in the day.

She uses 3 Scottish words that were new to me that I liked. Burn = a brook or small stream. Hirpling = moving about slowly from place to place (great word). And Burnybee = a ladybird or ladybug. Great words.

The nephew rather enjoyed this story. The repetition was good for him. He enjoyed the cast of characters. He gave this 4 stars. The niece got tired of the repetition and she didn’t like the artwork. She gave this 1 star.
