The Book of Azrael

Amber V. Nicole

4.07 AVERAGE

The first book in a new fantasy series, the Book of Azrael is a dual narrative story following Dianna and Liam as the former enemies combine forces to search for a book that could destroy everything they know. This book took me about 60% to get into and I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style, but the story and evolving relationship between Dianna and Liam helped me stick it out long enough to get into the book and finish it. The world building is complicated and I had to skim some things to not find myself bogged down but ended up binging the last 40%. The book ends on a cliffhanger so now I have to wait for book 2 to find out what happens next! I’d recommend this book with a warning for heavy world-building but to give it a chance!

I feel like this book took a year off of my lifespan and I was fighting to get to the end. Somewhat alarmed by the fact I didn’t even learn what the Book of Azrael was until page 483, so everything up to that point had absolutely no relevance or purpose behind it because I did not know what the stakes actually were. The ending was pretty crazy though, and some of the fantasy elements were interesting so I will be continuing (I say as if I haven’t owned the entire series in paperback since February)

hmm 3.5 i think. i loved the main characters but the plot started to fall flat to me towards the end and was too much about the romance not enough fantasy and then the end was predictable so idk if i feel connected enough to finish the series… but overall a fun read

“It was the most selfish desire in the world, but I wanted her more than a crown, more than a throne, more than air.”

this book is literally what i have been looking for ever since my fantasy hangover!!! goodness the world-building, the plot, the complex characters!? i literally loved it all and i was hooked from the start all the way to the end.

i love dianna. she is strong, independent, loyal to her sister but despite all that, she’s just someone who craves to be loved and loved. i wanna give her the biggest hug bc all the things that happened to her were so harsh and cruel.

also ofc our man samkiel! i love him. LOVE. HIM. he’s just a broken man who ended up seeing the light in our ironically dark fmc but their dynamic is soooo good. the banter, the little inside jokes, i loved every moment of them! the enemies to lovers part was so executed well too.

the ending literally made me GASP. i will in fact continue to read this series bc i cannot sleep at night not knowing how this story will continue.
