Average. I don’t think horror graphic novels are really my thing, but I liked the concept of all the keys. This definitely kept me interested.

Creative storyline, a little boy finds a door with a key. While that doesn’t sound like much, after going through hell in the summer, this little boy goes on a wild adventure. (I won’t spoil it, though I’m sure most who read this know the gist of the story).

Intrigued to continue reading the story in graphic format. Little to be desired in my opinion for the graphics though. Everyone looks so rough.

Entertaining story and great art work, though if you’re coming from the Netflix adaptation just know it’s darker than on screen.

“Kids always think they're coming into a story at the beginning, when usually they're coming in at the end.”

I watched the Netflix adaptation of this and really enjoyed it. Hence my interest in the comic. I can't say I was disappointed! Admittedly, the comic is much more graphic than the show so that was a bit of a surprise but once I got used to that, I really enjoyed the creepy crawlies this novel gave me. Usually I wouldn't go for the horror genre but this was a lot of fun. Its making me rethink the distate I thought I had for the genre. I would give massive trigger warnings for death and violence. If those things are difficult for you, this is not for you at all.

Despite the incredibly dark and violent content, it was a very easy and quick read. Gabriel Rodriguez on art did an amazing job conveying action and events from one panel to the next. The writing left a little to be desired in my opinion, with a heavy reliance on voiceover narration from the different characters.

The mystery of the keys, Key House, and the kids’ family history is definitely compelling. But the darkness that this family must live through is a little too much for me. The writing almost gets edgelordy at times especially with Ty. I mean just look at how many content warnings I had to put on this review! Also, while there is at least a little growth amongst the characters, their growth is perhaps in the exact wrong direction in that their trauma that haunts them is not only validated but is deepened as more terrible things keep happening. Bode is by far my favorite character as he’s the story’s only sense of innocence and curiosity.

I understand that this is a horror/mystery, but long story short is that everyone in this comic desperately needs therapy.

It had an interesting premise, however I think that personally it was way too gory for me to be able to enjoy the story. Also I detest plots that only work because the characters do stupid things and that is a large part of this plotline.

I think this has cemented that horror is just not the genre for me.
