I give this 3 stars because it kept my interest for the most part. However, I found the main character to be very unlikeable. I had trouble getting through the present day chapters. I also found the present day chapters to be very predictable. The chapters set in the past were intriguing because it was more of a mystery of what exactly happened to the main character to make her who she is presently.
If this book dealt with eating disorders, rape, and abuse correctly, it would have been better. The author made the main character so easy to hate that these dark subjects really were sort of a background act. The author had such an intimate connection to part of the plot and it just didn’t seem like she put the effort in to really talk about the sensitive subjects.
The second half of the book did draw me into the plot more and there were some plot twists that made me audibly gasp. I think Jessica has a talent for writing but the comparisons to Gillian Flynn don’t match up.

I am still not sure how I feel about this book, I saw Reese Witherspoon had bought the rights and it as compared to Gone Girl, so I thought it was right up my alley, but while I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. It kept me engaged, I wanted to know what was going to happen, but it left me just kind of sad and unsatisfied at the end. Too many big topics covered without really exploring them to satisfaction. Its not a bad book, just not a "must read" for me.
Really good summer read. It was a thrilling, page-turner that I would liken to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. Wasn't my favorite ending, but that's no different than other books I've read either. All around a good read.
Full disclosure it took me about half to two thirds through the book to “really get into it”. The main points of the plot were intriguing and very timely but I felt like the story seemed to drag on somewhat during the first half. There is a big surprise event that completely turned the poly around and made me dying to know what came next on each page. Warning - Ani was a fine character but at times she does tend to get on my nerves.
This should be required reading for all humans.
Completes the Book from This Year task of the Read Harder challenge.
TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT: GANG RAPE, ABORTION, BINGE EATING, SUICIDE, TRAUMA, SCHOOL SHOOTING
This book covers many topics while following Ani who is participating in a documentary about what happened at her high school.
She is now an adult and the seemingly perfect girl. Engaged and has a great job.
My main issue with this book was how Impersonal and lacking in emotion it was. The topics discussed in this book are emotional and very important to bring to light but the author failed to bring the emotional depth needed to pull off this kind of book.
The main character is not likable but I can forgive that since she has gone through a lot of trauma. But there weren’t any characters added to the story so the reader would like someone.
The ending did please me and I’m glad Ani will be getting justice.
I wish I could give this book more stars but with the lack of depth, I cannot give this book higher rating just because it contains these important elements.
This story could have been executed better. And I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

Given that I found the main character is shallow, unbalanced, nasty and all around unlikable, I couldn't put this down.
