This book just kept getting better as I went on - it was giving The Bold Type turned very serious meets mystery book. Ani, as a character, grew on me as the complexity of her story unraveled. All of the book’s major plot points felt very realistic (although hard to fathom all happening to one person) in today’s world, and something so many people can relate to.
Enjoyable but the fat shaming and diet talk took me out of it completely and maybe I didn’t catch it but I’m not sure how it was relevant to the story.

It's like The Devil Wears Prada meets Mean Girls meets Lisbeth Salander. Intriguing and disturbing all at the same time.
OK thriller that takes on too many heavy subjects for being a thriller.(Or for an OK-written thriller).
It's a pretty good story. but somehow somewhere along the way it flunked down to anti-climactic, which is an obvious disappointment for me.

I guess I would go with a solid 3.5 for thing, really. It took me forever to read... but that's because I was just coming home from vacation and then moving. This was the perfect fluff to carry me through. But that's really what it is. Fluff. It's one of those books that is compared to Gone Girl, to its detriment. This was not Gone Girl, but it could have been good on its own if I wasn't expecting it to have twists and be excessively clever.
I really wanted to love this book. It has been described as the next Gone Girl, and I'm ready for that book having read all of Flynn's books. The tension that Flynn so wonderfully creates is missing here. While I didn't love it, it was still a decent read. I felt that there was too much going on in the narrative- social climbing, awkward teen years, sexual assault/rape, school shootings, materialism, etc. with everything going on the storyline was jumbled and at times the flashbacks and present day were confusing. I found Ani's mother to be the most sympathetic and well developed character in the book. Pretty much all the characters were unlike able- and that is ok, I can still enjoy a book with unlike able characters.
