Garth Nix is on fine form with this book, his writing is as amazing as ever.
Never ceases to take me to a whole new world, like I can see it play out before and around me, rather than just reading words off a page.

The Old Kingdom 600 years before the days of Sabriel and Lirael is fascinating and exciting to behold, especially of Belisaere in it's more prosperous days.

A great read from start to finish. However, story wise, didn't completely win me over, I much prefer delving into the adventures of Sabriel and Lirael.
But that's just me. If you loved his Abhorsen series, then this is definitely worth a read.

I really love Garth Nix. He is certainly one of my favorite authors, one that I was in love with when I was a teen and such a passion only grew as I became an adult. His characters are as relateable now as they were then and I truly loved Clariel and I had to admit I already knew who Clariel was before I started reading it. Still, I sort of hoped I remembered it wrong. As I grew closer to the end I did not want her to be Chlorr, I wanted her to find her forest. But then the mask appeared and my heart raced!
Even if I'm quite sure Lirael will forever be one of my favorite characters, Clariel is a well-built character and her descent into villainhood (or anti-hero hood, is there such a word?) is perfectly depicted. I have no doubt believing she will be a Free Magic Sorcerer in the future and that will come back to hunt the Abhorsens (dammit, Bel!).
Looking forward to reading Goldenhand (yay, Lirael is back!) in a close future.

It's always fantastic when an author comes back to a series and the book feels like he never left it. Fantastic book that really helps a reader understand just how someone in the world of the Abhorsen might be seduced by Free Magic.

Really great prequel to the Abhorsen trilogy. Fantastic storytelling and lore from the Old Kingdom universe. Greatly enjoyed it!

I couldn’t connect as much with the characters in this book. I also felt the story was very slow and the climax too tame for how long it was and what all happened. Not my favorite of the series, but still a good read overall.
