i really hated gaia at the beginning, when she would do whatever she was asked and gave in to every man. i then also thought she was really stupid for believing she was in love with a man she 'met' once. then i thought she was even more stupid for giving up her voice and putting her life on the line for this man she doesnt actually know. but the towards the end when she found eleanor in the room of paintings and eleanor spoke of just how badly oliver behaves, causing gaia to pay more attention, i started to love gaia so much. she became strong very quickly and i loved the way she
scared and killed her father

This book was such a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, the writing and the voice are really strong and flow (ironically) like water. It's sooo easy to get through these pages and get sucked up by the story and the pretty wording. But on the other hand the themes were hammered on so often and so explicitly, with the text explaining exactly to the reader what to think instead of letting us do the work ourselves, that it fell flat for me. I like the feminist angle, but i would rather have had it shown to me than told. If more time had been spent actually fleshing out the characters and the moments between them, as well as showing the logic of the world in action more, I would've liked this book a whole lot more.

Fantastic dark retelling of the little mermaid- on par with the original story, but with a female perspective.
I think it’s a bit dark for a young teen, but Reader discretion advised in my opinion. I read through this one very quickly!
