3.5 :) it wasn’t bad the writing style just isn’t for me and it kind of felt more like a short story

first book i read in grade 11th and i remember being so confused with it because this was technically my second time reading a book since TPW. i would try to read it in between classes and in the car on my way to and way back from school. the goal was still the same as of now: to read as much books as possible and write book reviews and then practice essay writing (but i couldn’t do nada 👎 will try my best this year 🩷✨). i remember not even knowing what was going on and just wanting to finish it. but I do remember me trying to read this with girls in the beginning of the session wherein  the 4 or 5 would each read a page. and i also remember being intimidated by the criminal for the protagonist was the translator and kept imagining scenarios (fanfiction brainrot amirite). so ofc i will try to rewrite a review when i read this book again.

Beautifully written atmospheric intimate scenes. There is a plot, but it's kind of beside the point, this is much more of a book about mood and language, mood created by language. Largely a very quiet novel with an interior focus, that while built around these relationships and intimacies, it often left me with a feeling of distinct loneliness. Kitamura does an amazing job exploring different sorts of intimate moments: being vulnerable with a romantic partner, the act of interpreting language for an individual, watching a couple interact in public, inhabiting another's space, getting to know a new friend. The whole story floats along quickly, feeling almost ethereal, ungraspable, and rudderless.
