Fun read. Good action, enough character building to be interesting but not overdone. It's nice to be reading through timeline events that I am unfamiliar with.
A short, okay read. Unfortunately, the characters are under-developed, save for Hera and Kanan. The villain is one-dimensional, and there are many well worn tropes throughout the book. It probably did fine setting up Star Wars Rebel (I have not seen it yet) but as a standalone novel, it falls far short of other canon novels like Thrawn or Ahsoka.
The beginning was a little slow for me but it definitely picked up towards the middle. I didn’t really learn more about the characters but it is nice to know how their story began for the TV show.

This book is slow which is weird because there's so much going on. But it takes so long, and so slow, to get to the actual action. If I didn't pick this up for Kanan and Hera alone, I probably would have dnfed it a while back. Also taking so long to read it - I started in January and it's currently March - the slowness was only half of the reason. The other half was Rebels came back and I won't spoil the last half of the fourth season but if you watched it you can kinda see why I couldn't pick this up. But I'm going through Rebels withdrawals and here I am.
Basically, if you love Kanan and Hera, their relationship and their team work - read A New Dawn. I'm also hoping in the future we can get a book or books about where they find Zeb and Sabine and when they join the Ghost crew.

As a fan of the Rebels series this was the book of the new canon I was most looking forward to. I really enjoyed it but it is not exactly the story I was hoping for. While it did a great job introducing Hera and Kanan and told the story of how they met and teamed up I was really hoping that the other main characters from the series, Zeb, Sabine, and Chopper, would have been introduced too. Hopefully this means other Rebels books will be announced in the future.
STFU THIS IS LITERALLY AMAZINT???? i am in love with this book actually it’s my new favorite. kanan and hera my favs ever and the book was absolutely amazing and GOD IM SO HAPPY I LOVE STAR WARS SORRY GUYS this book is literally amazing
Kanan was low-key a bit of an Elan Sleazebaggano when he first met Hera
oh you know. It was fine. I was more interested in Kanaan's early, post-Jedi period. I could with done from more of Hera too.
