A New Dawn is designed to be a prequel to the Star Wars Rebels TV show.

As i have only seen the first couple of episodes of Star Wars Rebels, A New Dawn has helped me get to grips on what is happening after the creation of the Galactic Empire. A New Dawn focuses on Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus, specifically on how they end up working together at the start of the Rebels series.

A New Dawn was an enjoyable read, although a tad dark at times. We were introduced to a new planet (at least i had not heard of it before), Gorse and its moon Cynda, and got to see the evil empire working in full action!

The overall plot was a tad predictable, but it entertained me none the less. I would have had liked to read more on the imperial side, and not so much of Kanan and his self-love. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the plot twists, but looking back on it now they were a tad obvious due to the characters nature.

That said, A New Dawn was a really good read but it just missed that something that makes me fall in love with a book. I am definitely motivated to watch the Star Wars Rebels TV show now! A must read if you like the TV show.

A super fun action-adventure tale with little bits of pain sprinkled in (of course). Loved getting a glimpse of Kanan and Hera pre-Rebels, and the characterizations were on point! A very enjoyable read :-)

This would of been a 3 star, something good but not great, if it wasn’t for two main reasons. The high production value of the audiobook, with the great voice acting and the sound affects that really sell the story, and the ending which I found epic and satisfying enough bring it up a notch. The characters are amazing, the setting is very cool but I found the plot lacking. It also suffered the classic Star Wars problem of the baddies terrible aim, or the goodies getting out of bad situations in barely plausible ways. Mind you the last star wars book I read to was thrawn so that might just be on me. I still would recommend it, but it’s nothing special. Also some of the sound effects are so jarring, please turn down some of the electric beeping😅

A much easier read than Disney Thrawn. Satisfying arcs, likeable cast, good balance of familiar and new. Sullustans are sick!

hera is so cool i love her. she's mother fr
that said i wanted to know what she was thinking the whole time, not just a little bit here and there

kanan? that's literally ezra in a different font !!

having debilitating hyperfixations is one of my favorite pastimes

I really liked this book. The pace of the story was fast, the characters very enjoyable, and I liked getting glimpses into this time period of the Star Wars universe. This story also felt like Star Wars, that is no easy feat considering all the characters are new and unknown to us.
For me the book read fast and I liked the short chapter structure. That should not be taken as the book was simple or childish, because it was not. This is an adult Star Wars book.
I've read a lot of Star Wars EU books over the years, and honestly I was not someone who was upset with the announcement that the EU would be relabeled as "Legends". That being said this book did not rewrite anything in the old canon and actually incorporated some things from the EU. So I think those that were upset with the EU changes will be very happy with this first book in the new canon.
After reading this I am really looking forward the other upcoming novels.

An interesting "new" beginning for the Star Wars universe. Thankfully, they retained the talented Marc Thompson as reader.
