Maybe I’ll try again later. But it took half the book to meet the character that gives the book its name and didn’t get immediately good after that so I lost the will to read further

This book starts out great, the horse in the bathtub scene is one of the most memorable thing I've ever read. 75% trough the book it feels like we are only at around 25% in the story arch, then it has a rushed ending and that's all. Such a waste.

It's probably more a result of a a cozy rainy Sunday after a busy Friday and Saturday, but I found myself nodding off repeatedly while reading this. There was a plot, not too much nonsense, and some sharp satire about faith without reason...I can deal with a con man that is relatively harmless or possibly psychic, I can get into a computer programmer who likes mapping the world in music, and I love a little old professor who does conjuring tricks and has an unusual relationship with time. There was a spot of violence and violent intentions I wasn't expecting, the ghost lore feels more introduced than explored, but where it all really falls down is that my copy had a cat on the front cover and a mention of a cat on the back and very little cat content, no actual cat characters present, in the book. Bad advertising, for shame! I think Adams wanted it to be something a little more than silly, and I was looking for silly, and I'm not sure either of us got what we wanted. If I approach the rest of the series as sci-fi-fantasy-mysteries with a surrealist satirical twist I'll probably have a better time of it.

So much fun. This book is a short but wild and satisfying ride. Not as laugh out loud funny as the first three hitchhikers books but great sharp wit and excellent dialogue. A small but entertaining cast of characters. My only complaint is the book is over far too quickly.

This book might have my favorite ending of all time, I don't mean the wrapping up of the plot, I mean the final couple of sentences and the last threads it ties up.
