If I only have one word to describe Gallant, it's beautiful. From the first pages to the last, I was completely enthralled with the world created and the characters in it. From the first paragraphs, I had this sense that I was reading the story of what Crimson Peak would have been if it were written about family and home instead of a doomed romance. My heart ached for Olivia, who longed for somewhere to belong and someone to belong to. I was appalled at the conditions of Merilance and was pulled into the charm and mystery of Gallant. The characters were beyond enchanting and I would have been so incredibly happy to spend hundreds more pages with them.
And then there was the book itself. With the drawings that had such a heartbreaking meaning behind them and the journal entries that tragically illustrated the mother's descent into madness, I was utterly taken with the construction of the book itself. It's been years since I was so charmed by the experience of reading a book and I was sad to see it end. I can already tell that this will be a "comfort read" that I'll come back to again and again in the future.
