I really loved this book! There was something so special about watching a character learn about her history and family in real time. I loved watching her journey of self discovery and self love.

didnt really feel all that developed, especially the end was rushed
Those Illustrations?? Gorgeous!
As someone who absolutely adored Vicious and Vengeful I found Gallant to be...a little different. A mixing pot of Spooky vibes with a dash of Whimsical magic and you have something that kind of reminds me of a Tim Burton movie. Or in this case, Henry Selick, the director of Coraline. You have your main character, Olivia who is non-verbal and you get to look through her eyes and see the world around her. You feel everything she feels and gradually learn who she is and why she can see ghouls when other kids can't. Like those films, you can really picture the dark gray atmosphere for not only the Independent girls school the book starts off but the whole environment. It's really quite a talent to be able to bring a story to life with relatively little conversation.
On that note, Gallant, while interesting in the mystery nature, was just a tad slow for my tastes. Similar to The Night Circus, I found myself getting overwhelmed by the extra details and bogged down by things I just didn't care about. I didn't connect well with most of the characters, other than Olivia and to be honest, I still don't understand what's going on with her father/Gallant. The whole mystery was essentially figured out about halfway through the book and the ending just didn't feel very memorable. It felt like the author was at the end of the rope with this idea and was ready to move onto the next. Honestly, I don't blame them, if that's the case. Regardless, the idea wasn't a bad one and it wasn't necessarily executed badly, it just...in a comical sense, lacked color. Which I suppose would be the point for a book that is obsessed with shadows and death.
Still a good read if you enjoy spooky, whimsical stories; but fair warning, please, please, please READ the book, don't listen to it. Half of the story describes beautifully drawn pictures and they are gorgeous. The Illustrations by Manuel Sumberae are so intricate, I actually spent some time just looking at them during the halfway point of the story. They serve as not only beautiful eye candy but a core part of the story. I usually am a big advocate for Audiobooks, but skip it for the read this time around.

Now where is the story about the tragic romance of Olivia's mum and dad? I'm craving that.
