Always a fan of Schwab’s writing. She captured gothic fantasy for this one. The house, the ghouls, the atmosphere. It’s a like mix of Crimson Peak and Haunting of Hill House. It’s also amazing that our MC is mute and uses sign language.

I hoped there was a better ending though. Overall enjoyed the book and audiobook! This was such a good way to start my weekend reads!

I couldn’t put this down and ended up reading it in one sitting. Atmospheric with heavy themes, but it also felt like being read a spooky bedtime story or a story over a campfire - something strangely comforting about it, and fun enough for me to look past the lack of detailed context given for things like the wall, shadow world etc.
