The narrator reminds me of a sort of father who reads bedtime stories to his kids. He has that inflection/tone in his voice, and it's so soothing that I had to start physically reading this book. His soothing voice was very distracting!!! So I ended up reading the physical copy ahaha

It was a very calm and an aesthetic read. I've seen many complaints that the plot seems empty, that there's not enough driving it forward, but in my humble opinion, only people who need constant and obvious action to keep them occupied would see it that way.
I enjoyed Gallant because of its beautiful style and language that captured the gothic essence without sounding verbose. Despite its dark plot, I found the book very comforting to read and it felt like I could really take my time and be at my leisure with it.
Although I'm a sucker for romance, I loved that the main character didn't end up falling in love. There are elements of a lovestory, but they are a very by-the-way thing or only remnants of the past. The closest thing to a lovestory in this book is that the main character's parents were really in love, and that the servants who have lived at the same place their whole lives have an affinity for each other.
The plot and the characters and the development of interpersonal relationships seemed very thought through, and it really gives you enough time to like or dislike characters or even change your mind about them. Because there are no major battles or action scenes like that happening, the plot catalysts lie in the details, which falls very well with the slower pace.
