Ninety-some years ago, Gwen Engel’s great-great-grandfather cast a spell that cause the Dust Bowl, and as a result, all of his descendants have been forbidden to practice magic for 150 years. The Grand Council of Witches has even plant Watchers in their community to look out for any spellcasting from those banned. Then Gwen and her cousins, Trudy and Milo, each receive a letter from Gwen’s adoptive sister, Tannith, stating that she plans to run away with one of their husband/boyfriends to New York at the end of the week. As each worry about their relationships with their out-of-town beaux, Gwen worries that grad student Jeremy may be a Watcher. The stress has Trudy accidentally infusing her cupcakes with magic, and things continue to grow out of control for the cousins. The three need to learn to harness their powers to get the situation under control.

This is a lighthearted comedic novel that had me laughing out loud while the rest of the house was sleeping – oops! It was unfortunately a little slow at times, but for the most part, it kept me entertained. Emily Durante and Nick Mondelli did an excellent job with the audiobook format of this book. I would have loved to see more scenes from Griz! I recommend this book to people looking for a fluffy witchy read.

Overall, this was a solid 3.5 star read.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

Surprisingly fun! But it seem very harsh to punish a family for generations for something one person did ages ago.
And it seems that this book might get a follow up, I hope so

Really more of a 3.5 star book. Cute Rom-com sort of book featuring witches.

I won this book in a giveaway and was asked to review it before it’s been edited. All opinions are my own.

Well to start off this book was ok. The beginning needs some heavy editing and rewriting. There are a lot of words missing, words written twice, and grammar errors that I noticed. Also the writing is very jumbled and confusing. For example, I didn’t know I was reading in the perspective of cat in the first chapter until a whole page in. The family tree is very confusing and should’ve been explained in maybe a prologue, instead of the MC just rambling on about it randomly in the second chapter. A lot of the characters really lacked common sense and would assume or do some really stupid things without being rational. Also the reasoning behind why they can’t practice their magic is kind of lame. The story was just very muddled and confusing. Overall, the premise was cute and silly and I was hoping for something similar to Sabrina the Teenage Witch. There were some decent moments, but the writing wasn’t that great and the story really dragged on. I hope the story will be written better before it’s launch!

This is a quirky, entertaining, fun read. Full of human transformations, enchanted cupcakes and talking cats (Love Griz!), this is the perfect book for someone looking for a light, whimsical, cute witchy Halloween read. If you want an in-depth magic system and world building skip this book.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
