Gwen’s family was forbidden to practice magic thanks to an ancestor causing a major disaster. She and her cousins have minority dabbled (some accidentally) but have to be aware that anyone could be a Watcher ready to report their misdeeds to the Council. Their (not quite adopted) cousin Tannith has always managed to one up the cousins and sends a letter to all 3- Gwen, Trudy & Milo- claiming at the end of the week she is moving to New York with one of their partners and the most chaotic week of Gwen’s life ensues.

Parts of this are quite charming but overall the group has far too many weird encounters that they’re happy to brush off and forget about and apparently they don’t ever have any real conversations with each other because they sure have a hard time expressing themselves. The ending comes in hard and fast and feels unsatisfying. Spoilers:
Trudy’s husband gets turned back into a human just in time to keep her from getting arrested, Milo’s concerns over spying on his boyfriend are easily brushed away as he ends up proposing, and Gwen apparently breaks up with Daniel (we don’t see that on the page officially) and gets with Jeremy who claims he lives her (and not because of enchanted cupcakes) despite knowing each other for like 3 days. Gwen also spontaneously makes Tannith disappear, miraculously solving all their problems in about half a page.

Interspersed we get chapters in the point of view of Griz, Tannith’s black cat familiar. Overall they serve little purpose, mainly showing that Tannith has no redeeming qualities at all. The epilogue in his POV hints at a possible sequel but I’d vote to skip that one.
