2 1/2 stars, really.
Based on the first few minutes, I was expecting a kind of PG Wodehouse-esq series of capers, but it was much darker, in a blithe sort of way. Entertaining enough, but I can't say I liked any of the characters.

patrick's prose wit and humor are just so incredibly engaging. these characters i don’t like them one bit but this guy made me go through their lives like it’s all my business and i’m so glad i did because reading their cynicism, indifference, and, of course, their tragedies was as fun as it was piercing. truly devastating but somehow effortlessly heartwarming at the same time

Past goed in het oeuvre van bondige romans waarin zich van alles met en rond de personages afspeelt. Of het nu in het wilde westen is (Sister Brothers), een middeleeuwse fantasiewereld (Majordomo etc), of in recent New York en Parijs. Wel met een gereïncarneerde echtgenoot in de gedaante van een kat. En alle personages zijn op z’n minst een tikje raar, in een verder ogenschijnlijk logische wereld.
