A strong, complex exploration of the experience of rich Chinese teens shipped to the United States and that of poor Chinese students on scholarship to the U.S., and touching on the world of American Born Chinese and of other immigrant families, and how these experiences overlap, intersect, differ, and are all impacted by racism and power structures and dynamics that often work against them. Friendship is also explored, as well as romantic relationships both straight and lesbian. Thoughtfully crafted, it’s a thought-provoking read, in addition to being an excellent story. Recommended!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were really interesting but I felt like there was a lot going on at once and it was hard to follow both characters stories.

Two girls attend a private high school in California. One is a scholarship student who works as a house cleaner and excels in debate, while the other is a rich girl living apart from her family in China for the opportunity to study in America. Both girls are vulnerable in ways that girls are too often vulnerable, which was stressful to read but handled well.
