Loved reading this book! It was insightful and I learned about different cultures and about the East side of the U.S. Very engaging spin on Pride and Prejudice in a more diverse, modern way. Always nice to see representation! Also really liked the couples/leads, was rooting for them since the beginning!

I enjoyed this adaptation of an Austen classic. I especially loved the poetry woven into the storytelling, it was a very powerful tool for imparting the messages this book was trying to communicate. To be honest my main complaint was that the book seemed too short. I know pride and prejudice is also a shorter book, but I think that it expanded in a few areas that allowed for it to be more clear why Elizabeth would want to give Darcy a chance. Also, not necessarily a complaint about the book, but my own personal preference, I didn't like Ainsley and Darius being full brothers and having the sisters fall for blood brothers. I know there's nothing like actually wrong with that, it just gives me a bit of the ick compared to if they had been cousins or one had been adopted or something.
Overall, I loved how you could see all the events of Austen's book mirrored, but everything was put in a fresh modern light, allowing it to stand as its own successful story.

Graphic: Alcohol
Moderate: Death, Racism, and Sexual content
As high schoolers, the characters in this book do go to a party that leaves to some major alcohol use. In addition, there is a death of a family friend towards the end of the book. The death itself is not described as it occurs, just after the fact. I tagged for sexual content since that seemed the broadest to cover the events of this book. However, there wasn't any sexual content between the characters in this book past kissing. This book for sure falls within the YA category. However, there is an incident where a character is responsible for sharing inappropriate sexual pictures they've taken of someone without their consent with other friends which leads to the pictures spread. Similarly, I don't think there's a large incident involving racism, but consistently throughout the book there are themes of unconscious bias and racial stereotyping.booksthatburn's review against another edition

PRIDE retells Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick. Ibi Zoboi makes this story fresh and new, placing old worries and new love in a modern context so seamlessly that you don't have to be familiar with the original to be pulled into Zuri's world. Her love for her family shines through, and her rapport with Darius Darcy has a wonderful mix of tension and romance. Elizabeth Acevedo's performance as the audiobook narrator is so perfect, bringing the story to life and making me believe that she is Zuri.
