Book #56 read in 2020

OᐯᗴᖇᐯIᗴᗯ: Olivia is gearing up for her big 40th birthday party that she’s been planning forever. Her husband, Adam, is planning the perfect surprise to bring their daughter, Marnie, home from Hong Kong. But in a twist of events, both Olivia and Adam know a secret about Marnie that they are keeping from each other until the party is over.

ᗰY TᕼOᑌᘜᕼTᔕ: I really enjoyed the “backwardness” of this novel. Throughout the entire novel, the readers knew the secrets and watched the uncomfortable miscommunications Olivia and Adam have keeping the secrets. Since we knew the entire time what was happening, there were none of the major twists that I have come to love in thrillers. But, for me, it was a interesting take on the genre.

ᖇᗩTIᑎᘜ: ★★★★

Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Minotaur and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Livia never had a wedding that she has wanted, so for her 40th birthday she throws a huge bash. Adam plans to have Marnie to fly from Hong Kong to surprise her mother for the birthday. However, to not spoil her, Adam makes Marnie takes three connecting flights instead of a direct flight. However, the day of the bash, Adam sees a flight from Cairo crashes and kills everyone and Marnie may or may not been on the flight. Livia finds out a secret about Marnie. Adam and Livia both hold their secrets from one another.
I thought the suspense was good. However, I felt like it was very anticlimactic and a disappointing ending. I find this to be forgettable.

Maybe it’s 2020 but I’m just not enjoying reading books with endless dread and tragic outcomes just for their sake.

I grabbed this because I wanted to continue to read something easy and fun and fast moving. I liked "The Breakdown" and thought it was really fast moving. Alas this one is wildly different. No major twists, no major revelations, just a husband and wife musing and worried about two different and major things, never talking to each other and then then when they do, they do, and nothing really happens. Very much unlike The Breakdown.

Awful.

Livia has been waiting to have her 40th birthday party since he wedding. Unfortunately her daughter Marnie won’t be able to make it, but everyone else she loves will be there. As it turns out, everyone in this family is hiding a secret, something they are afraid to tell the others. Once the party is over though, all the secrets can finally be set free, but will will it be too late?

So going into this book I saw a lot of reviews that said this book is not like B.A. Paris’s previous works, and some weren’t a fan because of that. I have to say I had the exact opposite experience. I thought this book was excellent. It really explored the things we will do to protect the ones we love, and how much pain and anguish we will put ourselves through to do so. In thought the characters were delightful and so well done. Each one reminded me of someone I know, and it helped draw me into the story. This one comes out June 30th and you do not want to miss it!

Thank you to St Martins Press for the my gifted copy of this book!
