MY THOUGHTS:

- both the main characters are gender non-conforming and queer and it made me so ! dang! happy!!
- this is a story of fate and identity and how following your fate can be both great and terrible. Would I go about my life like either of the main characters? no. Did I understand why they did what they did? hell yes
- Ouyang and Zhu made fascinating foils and this is one of the rare occasions where I loved reading both perspectives equally!
-Ouyang's storyline broke my heart
- Zhu's storyline of eventual acceptance was dope but their pursuit of greatness at all costs makes me nervous for what comes next
- Xu Da can have my whole soul

Overall, I totally understand the hype of this book and I'm hopeful there's a second book because I wanna know what happens next!

I loved the characters and thought that plot was exciting. The writing was exquisite. But for some reason, it took me a long time to read. I definitely couldn’t binge it and just took it chapter by chapter. I cannot put my finger on why.

Do not undestand the hype on this one. The plays on gender felt oversimplyfied, and while they seemed to be trying to blur the binary, they really only ciment it. None of the character motivations had any emotional anchor and so felt hollow.

4.5 for some pacing inconsistency but rounded up for a truly incredible story, set of characters, and setting

Zhu becomes a monk.
What will happen to him/her?
Good, but detailed.
