I read this in memory of my Grandma who first got me hooked on these books and who I lost last year. I love this series so much. It's always dependable and light and fun. Qwilleran and his feline companions must investigate some extraterrestrial happenings while keeping an eye on a transplant from Florida. I highly recommend checking out this series if you haven't yet!

Not the best book in the series. Silly ending too

Didn’t realised this was so deep in to the series, this is the first book I’ve read

Personally I would have wanted more cat involvement, wasn’t really what I was expected based on the title
Also not sure what quill involvement really is, the murders were resolved by just a tell all kind of vibes, and there wasn’t too much suspense tbh

This was my first Lillian Jackson Braun and now I’m going to read everything else in the series.
The reasoning for the rating is as follows:
  • The writing style draws you in so much that even when it’s slow you want to keep reading - however, the book alternates between fun/interesting/cool and slow/why is this important/seems irrelevant. Some parts that were the latter might be continuations of earlier books and I missed the context (though the author did a fairly good job of providing context from previous books that I, having not read them, would’ve been more lost without, but other bits were just not really interesting. I loved the bits about the knitting/spinning and other arts scene details, I loved the small town vibes and interactions!
  • Re the murders:
One of the murders doesn’t get solved, one of them gets solved with little aplomb, and one seems like it could be a murder but could also be a natural disaster and either way is also dropped
  • Re the last few pages, which I loved with a vibrant intensity and if I find out it’s never mentioned again I will be very upset:
WAS ANYONE GONNA TELL ME THAT KOKO WAS AN ALIEN OR WAS I JIST SUPPOSED TO READ THAT MYSELF. I’m literally obsessed with the idea of little green cat aliens and I need a million more words about it
  • Not enough of the cats!!! There was about one good cat moment per chapter but I needed more lol
TLDR; overall so good that I’m reading every other book in the series starting as soon as I can request them from the library, good writing, sometimes a little too much tell with not enough plot relevancy but includes fun day to day small town life details that make the story feel very real, a little confusing sometimes, A+ cat content that there could be much more of, fun ufo conspiracy theory stuff, the murder parts seemed like an afterthought, aaaaaand I would definitely read again

Another cozy mystery, same datedness as the previous one, but also this one had a very unsatisfying ending! Of the 3 deaths, only 2 are explained, and that's done by having some random character tell Qwill after the fact what happened. No real investigation or discovery is performed.

Solid installment in the series if you like the characters. The mystery was not that greatly intertwined with our characters and the solution came by way of a complete account by someone else.
