My first attempt at reading one of the Great Russian Novels! The hardest part about it for me was actually the names of the characters: People have 3 names and are most often referred to by their first 2 names, but are sometimes referred to by their last name and sometimes also by a nickname that isn't always obvious.
This book is about many things, but seemed to be at its core a psychological thriller and a cautionary tale about the personal and societal repercussions of taking philosophical ideology to its "logical" conclusion. While I'm sure Dostoevsky was influenced by ideas and events happening in Russia in the mid 19th century, I kept thinking how the story could be applied any time and anywhere and feel just as compelling. Dostoevsky has a talent for creating complex characters who think and act like real people; I think he would have made a great detective and psychological profiler.

Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 are two books which as reading experiences I found flawed but whose ideas have stuck with me and have greatly affected my outlook on the world. Crime and punishment is a book that I will stay in my mind for a long time to come for the same reasons and one which I would recommend despite it taking me 5 months to get through.
I found the characters inconsistent and the world itself soul crushingly bleak, full of destructive alcoholics and their broken families. However the dialogue is often incredible, the ideas discussed fascinating and some of the most memorable scenes I’ve ever read even if I didn’t always enjoy them.

The reflections on society in à pre revolutionary Russia. Hints of, anti materialism and socialism. The crime is a product of capitalist society. (Modern perspective). Also religious, nice insight into the time.
Vivid.
At times excessively convoluted, dare I say hard to follow - but I ended up finishing this book with a deep fondness for the story, and the things it taught me and almost all characters included. I get why it’s a classic even though I cannot say it’s the perfect story or perfect book or perfect characters - I wouldn’t change anything about it.

Dark and explores morally gray situations. Oddly and satisfyingly relatable. The ending is everything. You're in for a ride.
