I really wanted to dislike this book. Rebecca Yarros has made some… questionable choices in her writing and her public presence, but when a coworker lent me the book I figured I might as well see if the hype was worth it. And yeah, her writing can be lazy and the romance made my skin crawl at times, but DAMN. This book pulled me IN. It really reminded me of the fantasy I loved so much in middle school but written for me as a 20-something. I mean, the Divergent parallels are so strong. But there are things that I think Yarros did well. I loved how she included a disabled main character and didn’t have magic just, cure her (bonus points for including a Deaf/Hard of Hearing character!). There is queer representation (albeit mostly in background characters) without being weird. And as I reached the latter part of the book I felt that the story became more unique. I’ll be diving into the second installment with relish, but I’ve still got my eye on you, Rebecca.

A fun read! It wasn’t exceptional in any way but it kept the pace, entertained & allowed the reader to fall into the story enough to be enjoyable!

A lot of the themes/tropes were very typical of the type of fantasy romance books currently on the market. I found myself predicting several of the plot points - but surprisingly that didn’t take away from my enjoyment factor which I consider most important.

Not too thought provoking and a little too focused on the explicit side of the story, as well as Violet going in circles too often; but I found myself attached to the dragons, and side characters regardless!
