I absolutely adored this book and it made me so excited to start Iron Flame. I haven't started a series for a while that really pulled me into their world like Fourth Wing did. It's so hard to not love all the characters and picture what they're going through in your head. I think that Fourth Wing ended on a wonderful cliff hanger and opening for the next book. I'm curious to see how the author will be able to stretch this story line out over 5 books though. I'm midway through Iron Flame now and am having a hard time conceptualizing their world for 3 more books, if she truly does end up creating a 5-book series.

My favorite parts of the book were definitely around the enemies to lovers plot line, and that the author didn't hold back in altering the trajectory of the plot. It reminded me a lot of Game of Thrones where no one is truly safe and the story just does whatever it wants. It will have you on the edge of your seat and you'll be eager to start Iron Flame.

1ST READ:
A fictional heroine with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in a DAMN GOOD fantasy based around a dragon school. Mystery, romance and spice ✨

2ND READ:
So good I read both this and Iron Flame a second time, within six months of the first read. So, so good.

3RD READ:
Just less than a year after my first read and I'm rereading the series again ahead of Onyx Storm. I never reread a book within a year, and never three times. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ again from me. I'm starting to get nervous for Onyx Storm now and I don't even know what I want to happen in it! 😂

  • What I liked: the story concept was really cool with the dragon army being an elite group of warriors to even survive long enough to GET a dragon and train with one. The school hierarchy was cool, too.
  • What I disliked: overused the word 'ribs' (it really bothered me), excessive thirsting and the fact you immediately knew
she'd go for the guy she was TOLD NOT TO GO NEAR OR BE MURDERED
, the obvious 'oh she's so special' aspect where she not only survives but
    gets two dragons
, and I didn't feel how she described chronic pain was accurate at all (though maybe it is for EDS, which I do not have).
  • Overall thoughts: still not sure how I feel about the
    secret rebellion
and the mom being the 'bad guy' felt pretty obvious based on her disdain for her disabled child.
  • Recommend to a friend? Maybe

Honestly, one of my favourite books ever. The EDS representation made me feel more seen than I've ever felt in any other piece of media. There was so much representation for other things such as Deafness, sign language, foster care, LGBTQ people (and it's normalised!) and accomodations (which are also normalised and people don't bat an eye!)
Also, I've not read much fantasy with Dragons, and I honestly love the dragons and other mythological creatures in this book.
I feel like everyone talks about the romance and writing etc, but romance isn't my focus, and I loved the writing and pacing of this book.

Just everything about this book had me silent screaming out of joy. Please read this book!

really had to force myself through this one, i wish I could have skipped the first 75% of the book, or just have been given cliffnotes. I feel like so much time is spent trying to convince the reader that Violet is weak and useless and then immediately negating that information with her actions. Honestly my biggest problem with this book was the prose itself, there is a lot of telling and not showing, and it reads like a 18yr olds diary. Maybe the second book will get into more of the logistical questions I have, like why this country is fine with, by my math, approx 200 eligible cadets dying BEFORE they even reach the front lines EVERY YEAR, or why the humans haven’t realized that they are canon fodder for their dragon overlords. (seriously can you imagine if the US military killed 130,000 enlisted before they even stepped foot out of boot camp?? how does the population even support that?? maybe you’d win the war better if you stopped murdering 2/3rds of your army in war games)
Anyway yeah plot wise it was only interesting once the twist happened. The main character is insufferable and I’m saying that as a bella swan stan. The bar is in hell and she couldn’t clear it
