“But what you don't know is what's going on in everyone's head, and what they might be thinking about everyone else.”

I've been meaning to try one of his books for years, but somehow they always slipped between the cracks of my TBR mountain... Until now that is. I was going to try the Joe Pickett books first, but I stumbled across my copy of Back of Beyond and after reading the blurb I couldn't resist reading it first. I love a good thriller with a wilderness/survival angle, and the Yellowstone National Park setting sounded like such a great backdrop... And it is this setting that made this story stand out for me. The main character Cody Hoyt is your typical flawed detective character; an alcoholic going rogue when he thinks the life of his son is in danger. I can't say that I liked him, but following his steps was entertaining enough I guess. Things can be said about the credibility of the plot and certain deductions are without doubt extremely farfetched, but you should be fine if you are able to ignore that, sit back and just enjoy the ride. I particularly enjoyed the chapters set in Yellowstone, and the plot gets pretty intense and graphic towards the ending. There were some twists I didn't see coming, while others were quite predictable... But overall it was a great start of the series, and I will be back for more soon.
