THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK. Nancy Drew Mystery Stories No. 1.
Carolyn Keene, Carolyn Keene
This is the first time I've picked up a Nancy Drew mystery since the third grade. The nostalgia factor was off the charts. It was tons of fun to revisit this story, but let me tell you that, as an adult, the premise of this book is WILD.
An 18-year-old woman inserts herself into a family inheritance battle between total strangers without any kind of invitation, and they're all just grateful? No one tells her she's overstepping or questions what right she has to interfere? Her lawyer father supports her in this definitely-inappropriate-if-not-actually-illegal behavior? IT. IS. WILD.

Read aloud with daughter. She thought the plot was neat, but felt it was too obvious to really enjoy.
Very repetitive. It’s the first Nancy Drew book. I remember them improving as they go along.

Nancy is polite and helpful, and buys a beautiful chiffon dress for no apparent reason.
i had forgotten that Nancy’s sidekicks Bess and George aren’t in this first book, and i missed them—they add so much to the tone and voice of the books. This first installment is simple, inoffensive, and tidy. A few signs that the author was just getting started include such groaners as 1) the entire first page, in which Nancy muses verbally to herself about basic facts of her own life; 2) “she thought… she wondered”, back to back in chapter 6; 3) Nancy realizing she’s hungry and saying to herself, “um, food,” like a person would. Also, she definitely wears outfits.
So much nostalgia! I remember reading some of this series when I was younger. The writing definitely leaves me wanting for more.
The Nancy Drew series was my very first reading series. I loved them with all the passion of a 10 year-old. I owned them all and read them over and over. These were the kindling of my lifelong passion for reading and exploring new things. And quite influential in my love for convertibles.
This is the first time I've ever read Nancy Drew, and you know... it was just okay for me. I'm interested in reading more, but this first one just wasn't what I hoped for. I personally had a hard time liking Nancy as a character. She is just too perfect. She is like this attractive, rich, white girl who's super nice and and generous... and just unrelatable. There's nothing wrong with her on paper... and that's exactly what's wrong with her. Does that make sense?
I thought the story itself was fun and I liked the mystery even if I didn't find it remarkably intriguing. I'm just hoping that some of the other books in the series are more up my alley.

Reading this book again made me feel so nostalgic! I used to read this countless times as a kid so I'm glad I picked it up again.
