I’m really in the mood for a good mystery, and this one definitely delivered!
The mystery was gripping and the enjoyable way it was presented was fun to read! I couldn’t put the book down, and ended up finishing it in an afternoon.
My mom gave me her copy of many of the Nancy Drew books she had when she was younger, but I never read them until now, and I’m glad I ended up reading it!
It was definitely written for kids younger than me, but the mystery was still fun and the writing kept me hooked. Another slight drawback was the fact that I really couldn’t picture the surroundings, which this could be explained by the fact it was written for younger kids.
Overall: it was a fun, quick mystery read that I definitely enjoyed, although I feel I was too old for it, and the lack of description of the surroundings was also set for a younger audience.
I would recommend this to 7-13 year olds who are interested in mysteries!

A classic and the benchmark for many other children's series. Wish fulfillment fiction at its finest.
Nancy Drew is literally the most positive person to ever exist
This was the original version, so I had to explain some things to my daughter as we read it together. My daughter said she liked it, but I admit to finding it quite dull. There seemed to be so much exposition, and most of it in dialogue. There was very little showing and a lot of recapping. I know I read scores of Nancy Drew books as a child, so I couldn't have disliked them then, but I also recall very little about them and don't remember being impacted. We've started on the first Bobsey Twins now, which my daughter immediately announced she preferred to Nancy Drew, saying, "They kind of act like you already knew Nancy," which I think was her way of saying--there's no characterization in The Secret of the Old Clock.

This series was one of my favorites when I was a kid. When I saw this beautiful cover, I had to get it. At first, I found myself very nostalgic about reading this book, but the further I went along, the more questions I had about the sheer number of coincidences and good luck that aided Nancy in solving this mystery. It just goes to show; what was magical to the eyes of a child is viewed with much skepticism by adult eyes. But I still really liked the story itself for what it is.
I read Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys throughout my school and college days.
Nancy Drew is an amateur detective who solves crimes with occasional help from her best friends, Bess and George and, her boyfriend Ned. She also has occasional help from her father Carson Drew who runs a private law practice. From finding stolen goods to missing persons and solving mysterious happenings, Nancy is a force of nature.
Until I discovered that Carolyn Keene is a pen name for a whole bunch of ghostwriters, I used to feel confused about the slight differences in each character from books to book over the many series of Nancy Drew mysteries. I like the character of Nancy best in the original books written by Mildred Wirt Benson where Nancy is truly a character to root for – an independent and street smart girl with a penchant for trouble.

Actually, I read them all... or at least all that were available in 1964. They were too tame.
Then I read the Hardy Boys. That was a little better.
Finally I moved on to science fiction and adventure, and things got more interesting.
