So fun reading an old childhood favorite. I appreciated more of the crime details as an adult that is into true crime. Nancy Drew has definitely withstood the test of time. Easy, fun read.

The Secret of the Old Clock (A Nancy Drew Mystery) by Carolyn Keene
The first of the Nancy Drew mysteries first published in 1930. The edition I have is 1946, one of the more rare editions and thankfully before they were re-written and censored starting in 1959.
Old man Crowley dies and leaves his fortune to the already-wealthy and notoriously snobbish, Tophams. Cutting out his much in-need relatives and friends that showed him great kindness during his last days.

Or did he?

Nancy, feeling ever sorrowful for those in plight, is determined to find a rumored second will. She befriends those relatives and friends and discovers one clue after another.
It's a great cozy mystery.
But it can be very melodramatic in showing the sadness, yet strength, of the Horner sisters. Friends of old man Crowley who desperately need any dime the can scrape together.
There is racial stereotypes. While it's not right, understand this was written 93 years ago. We've all (well, some of us) have evolved since then.
Re-writing or hiding it doesn't change what happened.

I've never known the backstory of Nancy until I read up on her.
Although she was very progressive and her creator created her as such, he was a huge hypocrite when it came to his daughters.
One author said the daughters were strong like Nancy but I don't see it.
They only went against their father's wishes and *gasp!* went to work because they couldn't find a suitable buyer for the company.
Then rewrote the books taking away some of Nancy's strength and certainly plot lines.

Such a fun adventure! Nancy Drew's stories have been around since the dawn of time as one of the first mystery series, and I have to say! I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. The writing is very complex, yet simple, and I think it was necessary for the storyline for the writing to be simple but sophisticated. And to think that the author was writing these stories decades ago!
I will definitely keep up with all of Nancy Drew's stories, and I hope you do too! 4/5

I’ve decided to re-read the Nancy Drew series as an adult. It’s definitely a work of its time and some phrases made me cringe, but I still enjoyed reading a book I enjoyed as a kid.

As an adult, it’s now an easy, fast read. Even though I know how things work out, it’s still nice to solve the case with Nancy.
