“I told her I don’t ever intend to die, an’ I meant it. But I’d be happy to leave pieces of myself with everyone else, even while I’m alive.”
i loved the development between abigail and mercy. abigail teaching mercy that people deserve to fight to their dying end and mercy teaching abigail how to dream again. and of course, the budding romance.
“See, that’s your problem,” she said. “You have to exercise your imagination if you want to use it for inside magic. If I tell you that sky looks like a lake, you don’t say no, you tell me what the stars are!”
“Carin’ what happens to someone doesn’t make it all right to make decisions for ’em,” she said. “Sometimes we choose our pain because it’s for somethin’ we believe in. If no one ever chose pain, then it’d be awful hard to get anything done, wouldn’t it?”
“Humans exist to be unnatural,” she said. “Nature’s cruel an’ unfair, an’ we decided to fix it. That’s why we’ve got clothes an’ houses an’ medicine. What’s natural isn’t always good. An’ as for me… I think I like what’s good an’ fair an’ kind better’n what’s natural.”
“I’m imaginin’ all sorts of nice things right now. I’ve imagined more things since I met you than I have in years an’ years.”
i especially loved the author's note about being inspired (or rather, in spite of) the Hays Code, which most people don't actually know about. among many rules it created for american film from 1934 to 1968, it included queer characters not being allowed happy endings and that they were to die tragically. this was atwater's response to that and i loved it.
the regency faerie tales have definitely become one of my all-time fav series 💖
