Definitely was not my cup of tea. I love dark and twisted and completely disturbing but this was...it wasn't even too much. The characters just did not draw me in AT ALL. Not only that, but the whole French thing? I studied the language all through middle school, high school and college, so I can tell when Google Translate came into play. I mean, even looking at the words and the sentence...you can just tell it's off. Another thing that was a little annoying/distracting was the translation following. I feel like most books I've read either don't translate it or somehow translate it without being so precise about it. Maybe that doesn't make sense. But I know what I mean. And maybe I'm nitpicking here but hey, I'm allowed to have an opinion. Although I enjoyed Tears of Tess...this definitely fell short for me. I was not hot for Q at all and Tess...well Tess was just annoying as hell, honestly. Needless to say...I think I'm good on this series. This was the first series that I read of this author and although I started Indebted, again, I could not become invested in the characters so...I'm looking forward to her new series but I won't be surprised if that falls short for me as well.

Loved it as much as the first time I read it, but I think my trilogy reread's ending here because I'm not wholly in the mood for it turns out. Beautiful love story but can be wordy at times and that's not what I'm in the mood for.

I liked this one significantly less than I did the first. It just seemed redundant to have Tess get kidnapped a second time by the same individuals. I feel like Pepper Winters could have chosen a different plot to advance Q and Tess's relationship. I'm not certain I want to read the third book or if I would recommend this one.

The trauma and depravity that Tess went through in book one was nothing compared to what she went through in book two. Quintessentially Q picks up right where Tears of Tess left off. I will be very honest here…I almost did not want to finish this audiobook after the first three hours. I took a break, listened to another book, then came back to it. I must not have been in the right mood. TBH it felt very slow, and the first three hours felt like one long BDSM spice scene. I am not big on that. No judgment! Just not my kink and I got bored.

I am sooooo glad I continued listening to this book though. It took an unexpected, but somewhat expected, dark turn, and I found myself very often with my mouth agape and completely enthralled. At first Tess had the inner will power and fight like no other, especially at a time where I could see myself giving up and shutting down. The things she had to endure and was forced to do were gut wrenching. Then at the turning point of this story when I expected Tess to rise above and overcome her trauma, she seemed to do the opposite. It was hair pulling suspense listening to it all unfold.

Now let’s talk about Q. Going into this book I was still on the fence about Q. I now fully accept my love and appreciation for Q (Quincy) Mercer. He is a changed man in my eyes. The type to burn the world down for his Tess. Or quite literally rip a man’s heart out for hurting Tess because that is what she asked for, whether she meant it literally or not. Yes, that was my favorite part. That was when Q stole my “heart.” He gave up so much of himself because of Tess and for Tess in this book. I can’t wait to find out how these two progress and carry out their promises in books three and four.

The thing I found most compelling in Pepper Winters’ writing was the way she was able to portray Tess’ mindset while being drugged. Tess’ thoughts were all very incoherent and jumbled, as I would have imagined them to be. It made her situation more believable and in the moment. I am currently reading two very different series by Pepper Winters and I am blown away by her range of writing and her creativity.

Quintessentially Q is the second book in the Monsters in the Dark series, and this book picks up right after the end of Tears of Tess so make sure you start there first. Tess and Q have found that they belong to each other. The complete each other in ways they never knew before finding one another. Though their path to each other wasn't easy, they knew that they were meant to be together. But now that they have embraced their desires and each other, they must learn how to deal with everything that means. Though their relationship is unconventional, it works for them. But sometimes finding each other is the easy part, it is working through the obstacles that can make or break a relationship.

Tess and Q are some of my absolute favorite characters, but this book was so hard at times for me. The way these two came together should have been the worst thing that they would ever go through, and yet they had even more thrown their way in this book. I loved Q and Tess together, and though most wouldn't agree with how they were with one another it worked for them. Tess and Q couldn't be defined by most people's standards, and I loved that they embraced their desires for one another and accepted each other as is. They both wanted to own one another, and it was clear that they did. We really got to see such different sides of them in this book with everything that they went through, and at times it really broke my heart. I was glad that we got to see a whole new depth to their relationship though, and it was clear that things had progressed so far beyond just the physical for these two. They still had the passion and chemistry, but they also had this undeniable connection that is so rare and hard to find.

This book was again proof of Pepper Winter's fabulous writing. I couldn't put it down, and though it was hard to get through I devoured it. I had so many emotions while reading this book, and I have to admit I was kind of all over the place. This book really messed with my mind. It was dark and raw, and I honestly didn't know what would happen from one chapter to the next. I hoped that everything would come out for the best with Q and Tess, but there were times that I honestly worried for them and the relationship that they had found with one another. Vengeance is never easy, and the affects it had on these two was profound. I honestly cannot wait to see what happens next in this series though and I really liked where we left off with these two. I am curious to see what else Pepper has in store for these characters. This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, just as Pepper Winters has become a new favorite author for me as well.

I have such conflicting feeling about these books. I can’t stop reading. But I also don’t understand the darkness. It’s hard to read about someone going through all that Tess goes through. I can understand the love and obsession they have for each other only just based on the rawness they show each other. Although I don’t like the darkness but a love like that would be unbelievable.

To say I loved this book feels so flat. This story is perfection.
