We Were Liars

It honestly took me less than two seconds after the first chapter to figure out that all the other liars were dead... it was increasingly obvious as the book progressed and after you figure out they’re dead, it makes the book so excruciatingly tedious that I pretty much was flipping through the pages, occasionally stopping to read a sentence or two. The main character was such a two-dimensional character with no true depth that even the “interesting things” about her (like her memory loss and migraines) came off more annoying and whiny than whatever way they were actually supposed to come across. This book was also super repetitive... which I realize with the memory loss was actually supposed to add to the story, but didn’t. The one thing I can credit this book for is for making the “accident” a fire instead of a drowning. I did not see that coming. But that leads the ending to be seriously messed up as Cadence just kind of casually rejoins the rest of her non-dead family and “promises to do better” after she just recalled that she masterminded to burn an entire HOUSE down because that’s a super smart logical thing to do (which by the way would be they type of memories that would floor most people. Like you know a lifetime of therapy and medication for the PTSD... and maybe GUILT!!!!!) Anyway besides the slightly unrealistic responses throughout this book there’s also the problem that everyone acts like they are the stars on a reality TV show... anyway I know this review is all over the place but frankly the book is too.

i knew what was coming and the ending was still heart wrenching. can we get a version where they all are happy and gat & cady are happy in college? the only thing i didn't like about the book was that it was very hard to tell what summer we were in at times

Lockhart's style is extremely lyrical and takes considerable narrative license with a style that borders on free-verse poetry--the execution works out in that it creates a haze-like atmosphere that suits the narrator, but it didn't so much engage me as it does detach. What else? Lockhart's statements about wealth aren't exactly bold, but those about tragedy, especially those towards the end, were fascinating. She kept me turning pages, and alright, I swallowed the twist at the end. I'll buy it, although I couldn't help feeling like she cheats with her narrative at some points to make the twist feel more surprising. It's interesting, and other than the typical teenage characters who think they know everything, I'd say it's on the highbrow side of YA-lit. My biggest problem with the novel is that I never really cared about the characters I was reading about, and while it's hard to care for characters in a book that deals with greed so heavily, it's not impossible, and it was hard to become emotionally invested in any of them.

Overall, a smart, readable novel for the YA set.

My husband does this voice sometimes and says the words “The tennis courts, Buffy!” You get the idea. The first few chapters of we were liars felt like that voice, a put-on, a mockery, and pretentious. But while it’s funny as a voice, it was more boring as a book.

And then I settled in. Yes, I always start to gain interest when a mystery presents itself, but I also started to appreciate e. lockhart‘s commentary on the effect money can have on a family. The way it can create emotional competition to the point of misery. The way the US waspy upper class upholds white supremacy as a silent agreement and a threat. The destruction it can wreak on people. This is a short book that packs quite a lot more than I thought it would. Having low expectations for a book can often lead to very pleasant surprises.

This book lacked all emotional investment that was necessary for the reveals to be as significant as the book wanted them to be. I guessed from early on what the twist would be and also didn’t find myself knowing the charcters enough to be downtrodden in respect to their fate. Book had the capacity to be a great story about how wealth just creates more problem and how destroying wealth can be a reformative process for the individual. But it was rushed.
