I was deciding what rating to give this book the mysteries are good and the writing is as well so 2 stars but the Amish part was not strange so much as clearly pushing a conserved Christian/American values and I found that overly obvious and unnecessary.

Compilation of 6 Kate Burkholder short stories. These novellas are quick snippets of investigations that Kate is researching, or they provide an insight into her Amish history and how now, as an English (non-Amish) she interacts with the Amish.

This collection of short stories follows Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, of Paintersville, which is located just outside of Amish country. She works closely with her life partner, John Tomasetti, who is a detective at a neighbouring police station.

I listened to the audiobook and each of the stories went for approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. Each story has a crime that occurs and Kate ultimately solves each of the cases.

My biggest gripe with this series is that there was an introduction with every story. Ie the script was along the lines of “I’m Kate Burkholder and I’m the chief of police of Paintersville county…”

However, overall, it was a pretty good series

A short story collection featuring one of my favorite police chiefs, formerly Amish Kate Burkholder.

Long Lost: 5/5 stars. Amazing sense of atmosphere!

A Hidden Secret: 4/5 stars. The connection between Kate and the baby was so well-written.

Seeds of Deception: 3/5. I guessed the whodunit at the beginning BUT it was still an interesting story about Kate’s background.

Only the Lucky: 3/5.

In Dark Company: 4/5.

In Plain Sight: 4/5.

I also love that none of these are murder mysteries. It goes to show the length & breadth of crimes that Kate has to solve and is honestly a bit of a breath of fresh air following the extremely brutal murders in the full length books in this series.

Castillo does an amazing, amazing job of creating the atmosphere/ambiance for each story. Her descriptions make me feel like I’m there; this is one of my favorite things about this short story collection. I feel like it really shines here, more so than in the full length novels.

Short stories of the Amish adventures/murders. Kept my attention. Many stories made into longer book versions.

Long lost was a really interested approach to a girl gone missing trope
A hidden secret was heart breaking
Seeds of deception was a bit slow
In dark company was very interesting! A bit slow but I liked the emergence of more Amish subcultures
I really enjoyed only the lucky and in plain sight

I do not enjoy short stories at all, but it was nice reading a few about Kate.
