I've read all but two or three of the Amsterdam Cops books, and I have to say that this is most certainly one of the least interesting. Knowing that van de Wetering was living in Maine, it seems that he made the fatal decision to take some of his fictional characters with him. It really doesn't work well.

There is such a sense of space in these books, I find them remarkably calming. That's maybe a weird review for a mystery series, but the story itself is somewhat secondary.
