I couldn't put this manga down! It was dark, tense, and so fast-paced that I read it in one sitting. This black edition includes both volumes one and two.
A star high school student, Light Yagami, finds the Death Note outside of his school. The Death Note belongs to a Shinigami, a death god. If the rules are followed and an individual's full name is written in the Death Note, that person will die. Light becomes obsessed with the power that comes with the Death Note and begins his journey of ridding the world of evil. Light is incredibly intelligent, and he uses the Death Note in a way where people will understand that these criminals' deaths are not coincidental. An unknown person, L, begins working with the police to put an end to these deaths.
I loved this manga. The illustrations of the Shinigami, Ryuk, were creepy! Ryuk stated multiple times that he was merely an observer and was on neither Light's nor L's side, but I couldn't help but feel like he was secretly rooting for Light. Both Ryuk and Light are bored. The way Light uses the Death Note continues to make things interesting and mysterious for Ryuk and the reader. Light starts to get too out of control, and I think he wants to become a Shinigami himself.
