I really liked the formatting of this book. Telling the story through letters made it that much more personal for the reader. I also thought character development was good, as there were things I loved and hated in each character, something I can't say for a lot of contemporary literature I have read. For readers who enjoyed this novel, I would recommend "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery. It deals with a precocious, albeit strange adolescent and her relationship with an eccentric landlady.

A funny yet touching story narrated mostly by a variety of correspondence as well as by the title characters 8th grade daughter. Given the cast of comically crazy characters & plethora of predicaments you really are wondering where the heck did Bernadette go by the middle of the book.

I enjoyed the unusual narrative of the story and it was gripping story that I couldn't put down. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending and a minor lot point but I still enjoyed the book.

The audiobook version of this is great. Really loved the narrator (after I got used to her).

Farcical in ways that didn't always feel intentional, but were still often fun. Some of the characters were terrific... for stretches. None of them felt genuine through the whole arc, and that made the book feel thin to me. But the phrase "blackberry abatement specialist" is permanently added to my vocabulary, and I have a soft spot for characters who avoid school involvement. So: enjoyable for long stretches, though not a favorite.

4 stars only because there was body-shamimg. Otherwise, a creative, unique story!
