One complaint already- The audiobook needs to balance the bits with music better. It's too loud compared to the narration and it makes it difficult to understand what is being said. I just skipped the part about Rapunzel because I couldn't understand most of what was being said...

In the beginning, I found myself loving the authors writing style more than the story, which seemed already worn out. But as I kept going, I got into the characters and their fight more and more as the story began to shift in interesting ways - even though at times it was hard to keep on because one can only rehash so much the violence the patriarchy inflicts on women. So in the end, I found myself enjoying it more than I initially thought and the conclusion turned out to be satisfying enough for the full five stars.

However, I listened to the audiobook and the “atmospheric music” that at times plays over the narrator (who did a good job) was so annoying and loud that I couldn’t even hear the words!! This was endlessly frustrating and I missed parts of the narrative, which negatively impacted my experience of this book. I’d recommended reading this one with your eyes if you are able, because it’s hard on the ears.

At first I had a hard time getting into this one but looking back, I think it was more book hangover from another text (Alice Hoffman's Rules of Magic) and less about this text itself because as I got further into the story, my attachment to these three sisters and their quest grew to the point of having to finish the reading in one last sitting.

There once were three sisters...

This is a delightful love letter to children's stories, fairy tales, and womanhood. It is also a fierce and furious feminist tale. It is all this and more, and I love it for what it is.

We follow the sisters Eastwood, as they find themselves at the center of a puzzle to find the hidden Way back to the tower of Avalon, where resides a repository of witch knowledge, and more besides. The setting is 1893, New Salem. Our protagonists were taught some witching ways as children by their caretaker, but most witching knowledge has been lost to time and children's stories. Or so they all thought until Bella, the eldest, dives deeper into her research and finds bits of lost knowledge, hidden in plain sight. The antagonist is an up and coming mayor candidate who wants to remove any hint of witchcraft from his city. He will let nothing stand in his way, but why?

I devoured this book in a matter of days and want to revisit it again. I love the concept, I love the world, and I love the sisters.
