It was a interesting story, a little slow in the beginning, but it did grab me near the end. I just don't think it grabbed me enough to read the rest of the series.

Overall, I did enjoy The Glass Sentence. It has many elements I like, and the characters are all lovable, especially Theo, in my opinion. The plot was a bit strange and convoluted at times, and there were quite a few glaring plot holes here and there. But the story was solid enough to keep me engaged through it all. I especially enjoyed the twists near the end, and am excited to read the next two books in the trilogy.

An interesting book with likable characters. I appreciate the idea of new, unique, and intriguing methods of cartography. I have always been fascinated by maps and this book shares that love.

The story is very original and creative. However I found the world building to be very confusing and all over the place. The world that the story is based in is quite complex and interesting but I felt like it wasn't explained quite well, leaving some parts open ended or not getting the point across while explaining other phenomena in this book. Overall it didn't form a coherent picture. I did like how the first book wrapped up and the lead up to the next book in the epilogue. I am definitely going to continue with the series.

Illogical, hard to follow plot. At many points my eyes were just going over the words not being able to absorb them, or even build a mental image of what was happening, except for brief flashes. I want to run through an imaginary world that feels as easy as breathing, not stumble through it on stilted fumbling steps because I can't make out what kind of terrain Im even walking on. Nothing in this book made any sense. And it's such a shame because the premise sounded so interesting! I love cartography and travel and historical fiction. My favorite things in fact! And adding the element of different parts of the world being trapped in different times sounded like a new and fascinating concept. I hoped we would get to travel to those new times in this book. Instead we were stuck in pretty much the same age throughout the whole story. Also thrown in were way more weird science fiction abilities/powers/body modifications?/monsters/magic/etc. than I had anticipated. It was so utterly random. Grass hair? Thorn skin?? Huh??? And no explanations of anything. Ever. I was so. confused. the entire. book. And I couldn't even exert the mental energy to try and invent or reason my way through the nonsense of the 'world building', because you are constantly bombarded with new concepts and ideas that just appear out of thin air without any explanation which you're just meant to roll with. In some ways, this book was basic and predictable, in others unbelievably confusing and extremely hard to follow. I'd also like to echo what some other reviewers have said - what audience is this book intended for??? The MC is 13 years old, but this book seems rather advanced in concept and certain elements that are more adult like torture/body mutilation/depression for readers of similar age. Wanted to like this book so much, but wow it really fell short of the mark.

Very fun book. I love the tie-in of maps and magic. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the mish-mash world of various Ages as the main characters explore in the following novels.

*cue incessant swearing over how I do not possess the sequel*

This book was fantastic. Finishing it makes me feel as though I haven't read something with so much world-building and so much imagination in ages. I mean, as someone who struggles with world-building in her writing, the idea that Grove created a setting THAT intricate and in-depth almost terrifies me as much as it astounds me. I hope she took a really long nap after she turned in her final draft/revisions.

Random thoughts:

So much of this book reminds me of His Dark Materials , which I think is mainly due to the fact that 1) it's an alternate version of our world, 2) there's traveling and a magical navigational device, and 3) because the two main characters, Sophia and Theo, have a friendship somewhat reminiscent to Lyra and Will. As characters go, Sophia charmed the heck out of me with her cuteness and Theo warmed my heart, but aside from the two of them and the pirates, the baddie of the book, Blanca, may have been my favorite character.

The time travel was brilliantly unique and creative - unlike anything I've ever seen or read, although that may only be because my sole intake of time travel comes from Doctor Who . Again, the world-building was bananas. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of reading about world-building if it comes in long waves of paragraph after paragraph, but since I listened to the audio book in the car, I didn't really mind it, and I think it made me appreciate the details all the more. The Lacrima nearly gave me chills, especially at the end. And even though I expected something so different from what actually happened in the book's climax, what I got was heart-wrenching and perfect and makes me unable to form cohesive sentences.

I am going to beg everyone and their cousins to read this book. I'm going to shout from the rooftops for the next month or so about how everyone needs to read this book. I'm going to send notes to people anonymously for Valentine's Day, and when they open those notes, thinking that they have a secret admirer, all they'll find is a Howler-esque message about how they need to read this book.

Specifically marketed towards fans of Phillip Pullman I had decently high hopes. And while the stories share similarities, for whatever reason it was a real drag to get through this one. Maybe because it was an audiobook which isn’t typical for me?

Took a while for me to get into, but a fascinating world.
