Update: in hindsight it does not compare to my other 5 star reviewed books. It's still a slay tho!

That was fucking buckwild crazy. A rollercoaster from start to finish. Read it in one day. Can't believe junji right now.
Was this all a metaphor for stardom? Unreachable expectations? Obsession rather than love? Powerlessness?
I could speculate the thematic aspects for a long, long time.
The story was shocking, disturbing, but equally as hilarious at times. The main characters are wearing plot armour made of the foreskin of gods, I swear! Absolutely ridiculous and unrealistic...
Love it!
There have been multiple instances where I thought it would all end on a page and then... Oh? No, they survived! Somehow...
But its junji ito so i'll take it.
This story had me laugh out loud. Gasp, shocked! Recoil in disgust. Yell at the characters. And shake the book in frustration.

Insane... 5 stars!

My least favorite from junji ito
dark sad tense fast-paced

A fever-dream that is more concerned with a flow of emotional anxieties stemming from the cosmic terror that is human nature than it is with any kind of sci-fi realism. Just as the hell-star licks up planets, this one is a pleasure to devour.

Usually Junji Ito's art compensates for his often poor writing, yet in Remina the problems in story, pacing and character are irredeemable. The protagonist is whisked from event to event, with her actions having no impact on the story. She is a living Mac Guffin that screams and cries, or is simply unconscious, as other characters drag her through the plot. The cast of supporting characters and villains are hollow, and the plot seems improvised and erratic. Worst of all, the art is forgettable. Not bad, but also not as chilling or effective as the illustrations in Ito's other works. All in all, this a very poor showing by Junji.
