Retro-futurist cosmic horror, very unique compared to Junji Ito's other work. Probably my least favorite of the multi-part Ito stories I've read so far, but still fun as usual.

I really liked the "witch hunt" part of the plot, but I'm not so much a sci fi fan, it was really really interesting tho

I liked the horror aspect and the art; the characters are relatively shallow though and I find them hard to believe at times

What a mess of a story! Such beautiful artwork and a great premise (a sentient planet from deep space needs no explanation or reason, cosmic horror just is) all for an incoherent, over the top, ridiculous mess.
Remina as a character exists to suffer and cry, and she is unable to do anything to help herself. She is saved and dragged around by men who are infinitely more capable than her despite all of them facing the same unprecedented threat, all the while she yells and cries some more. The world is ending and it's all somehow this random girl's fault (despite the fact that she did nothing at all), which makes Ito think that I want to see scene after scene where she is gratuitously beaten, almost assaulted, and generally abused for many more panels than could be written off as "exposition". It's not the first time he has indulged in brutality against feminine characters, far more than he has ever depicted the suffering of male characters going through the same exact situations. In this case, Remina's father and one of the men who help her are both blamed and killed, like Remina herself, but both die in a fraction of the number of panels that Remina is brutalized for.
Somewhere along this nonsense people start randomly zooming through the earth's atmosphere and travelling across the globe, but they can still talk to each other in the meantime, and it all becomes so dumb, that you can't even really be mad at it anymore.
I have given Junji Ito a lot of chances now but every work I've read has only reinforced that as much as the man can draw, his plots are mostly weak and juvenile. I might give Uzumaki a chance because it's his most lauded work, but I will likely not be picking up anything else from him.
