I literally inhaled this. The scariest thing is not the paranormal stuff but the human behavior. It’s very cult-like. The power of the leader is such a big thing. I think this might be an underrated Ito’s work, it’s not his normal line of work but still so creepy. The sci-fi elements were nice. My only problem is that I wish that Remina (the girl) had a little bit more of an attitude, but I know that if I were in her position I would want to stop trying too. The homeless man being the rich men son was a nice touch. The similarity between the executions in the book and biblical stuff is terrifying for me.
i felt bad for remina. she was innocent yet suffered hell. the issue started with the appearance of a strange planet that ate other planets and was going closer to earth. it'd reveal the human instincts to survive combined with greed and obsession. this book is another work of junji ito that depicts the apocalypse or the end of humanity besides [b:Gyo: Complete Edition|179008769|Gyo Complete Edition|Junji Ito|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1687042072l/179008769._SX50_.jpg|40862334].
It's mostly stupid nonsense, but the art is obviously good and at times interesting, and some of the idiocy made me laugh
I’m on an Ito Marathon. This is my 11th Ito purchase by Viz media and I think it might be a masterpiece. It’s excellent in its own way and one of his few singular stories that really nails the feeling of dread in its cosmic horror. Exhilarating all the way thru and was originally published in 2005 so the illustrations are undoubtedly masterful.
Don’t get me wrong - while it was an emotional workout, I loved No Longer Human too; a gut wrenching outlier and literary masterpiece of an adaptation in its own right, and one that may be my favorite so far as I’m saving Uzumaki for last.
And while Hellstar Remina is COMPLETELY different than that one - I enjoyed it just as much in a completely different way.
I’d say that if you’re new to Junji Ito - this is an excellent starting point. The artwork is stunning and the story is fast paced. It’s a speed read at 240-some pages and it’s as electrifying as watching Fury Road in iMAX. You’re bound to get hooked.
