Hellstar Remina

Junji Ito

3.55 AVERAGE

my first junji ito and unfortunately it was a two star story for me but the artwork was really good so i bumped it to three stars.
i loved remina the planet - i only wish we learned more about her. the earth portion of the story was a little too heavy handed for my liking, and remina the girl wasn’t really fleshed out enough to make me invested.

let remina eat in peace.

Well. 45 mins and done.
I heard great things about Remina, and loved Uzumaki so much, so I was excited for this. I guess with it being only so long, it can only give so much of a story, but it didn't hold much for me.
5 seconds of her fame and then burn her at the stake. Art forever gorgeous, but not the same level of horror as Uzumaki was.

What in the sexual sadism?! This is just one long flogging story of a sobbing teenaged girl. Nope!

Not as good as uzumaki, but crazy and fun in its own way. Still a misogynistic streak.

I enjoyed this longer story, I love sci-fi so knew I’d like this style of story. This was so disturbing and not because of the planet destroying, mega planet but the way the people acted. It’s one of those stories where the people are the scariest part and it’s not even that out there, 100% there are people out there stupid enough to blame impending doom on a man and his kid

Junji Ito always delivers with his brand of horror that gets to the readers by reminding us how fragile humans are. There was a lot of this here, and some of his fantastically awful body horror-esque art (but not enough, in my opinion).
I'm glad that the manga doesn't go for much longer, as it seems like it had a general idea and plot, but Ito doesn't seem too bothered to flesh out the comments/plots/characters he introduces. Even for a "short" (hardcover has over 200 pages) story, however, it does seem too superficial for a Junji Ito manga, and giving more depth to what we see falls on the reader.

I am particularly annoyed by how much of a non-character Remina was.

this actually happened to a buddy of mine
