Gary Schmidt knows how to tell a story and imbues his characters with such a distinct and perfect voice! This is a heartbreaker, poignant and powerful.

Sheesh. This book had no business being that emotional. This will leave a hole in my heart forever....

This was beautiful and tragic and something about it was inexplicably griping. I think it would’ve benefitted from being longer and having older characters, though. I really enjoyed it, but it ultimately felt very surface-level (which was disappointing considering how much potential the premise had).

So tender! Even in the cycle of pain and violence and wronging--there are people who care, who try, and who love.
