Oh my! I thought it was a little slow at the start, but thankfully it picked up quickly.
I was reading this on the bus and most times needed to remind myself not to laugh out too loud.
Brian is your typical 19 year old boy in every way. He does seem to have a spectacular vocabulary so every time I wanted to smack him for his ridiculous actions, I needed to remind myself of this little fact.
Overall a great read and would definitely recommend it.

Enjoyable but not gripping. I wasn’t thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it. I laughed a lot when I read it and I loved the additions of University Challenge questions at the opening of each chapter

Brian annoyed me a bit too much to really enjoy this book ngl but she was funny at points x

Easiest read I’ve had in ages, granted I’m very familiar with the film version so perhaps that’s why. Reminds me of being a fresher and makes me wish I was 18 again.

cute! and fun! maybe it’s not really that well written, but i’d happily give that up for a book you can have fun with

This is my fourth reread of Nicholls' first novel and it feels just as fresh and brilliant as the first time.

Brian is an awkward, oddly confident plonker of a protagonist who desperately wants to be his best and most feminist self but doesn't quite manage it. There are far too many distractions such as beautiful girls and the possible glory of winning University Challenge that get in the way. The secondhand embarrasment from Brian's actions is something else. Nicholls is deeply funny, ever so good at character and creates a nostalgia for the eighties that I want to return to (even though I was never there).

I did enjoy this book on the whole but the ending was a let down. Alice's character is also a bit of a sexist stereotype for me. Interesting insight into how university was viewed in the 80s.
